Smiles for Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home this Mandela Day

Liberty Midlands Mall donates to children’s home

Pietermaritzburg, 18 July 2023: Mandela Day is a call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact, driven by the idea, that we can all dedicate 67 minutes of our time, to help create a brighter world. This Mandela Day, Liberty Midlands Mall did exactly that, putting smiles on the faces of the many remarkable children at the Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home.

The non-profit organisation operates on a 24-hour basis, providing a home for children who are orphaned and vulnerable as well as children who are affected by HIV & AIDS. As the oldest children’s home in the city, accommodating children between the ages of 4 and 20, the home provides child care services and a loving environment to youth affected by unfortunate circumstances.

Liberty Midlands Mall centre management team and a few tenants visited the Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home and spent an afternoon with the children.  A donation of a TV and some soccer balls was made.  The kids were extremely delighted with the donuts and cake,  sponsored by Krispy Kreme and Pick n Pay.  The mall also made a R 5 000 cash donation to contribute to the organisation’s running costs.

“The Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home provide incredible, much needed to support to these vulnerable children on a daily basis” said Desmond Heunis, the General Manager of Liberty Midlands Mall. “I am so pleased that we could make a contribution to support their operations, and that we got to see the remarkable children in their care. They deserve all our love and support,” he concluded.
